The Death Penalty

The Death Penalty â€Å"If we neglect to execute killers, and doing so would in actuality have deflected different homicides, we have permitted the murdering of a lot of blameless casualties. I would much rather hazard the previous. This, to me, is certifiably not an intense call. † (McAdams) capital punishment ought to be legitimized in every one of the fifty states, to deflect from wrongdoing, keep recurrent wrongdoers off of the lanes, and to decrease citizens the expense of keeping those saw as blameworthy of shocking violations in jail low. Capital punishment can in reality discourage intolerable violations from being submitted when it is legitimate in a state. Social researchers have expressed that the demonstration of general discouragement, which is the point at which the discipline hinders potential lawbreakers from carrying out wrongdoings, shields hoodlums from proceeding with violations. Notwithstanding, it is more demonstrated that planned wrongdoings are typically the ones halted by general discouragement, not violations under enthusiasm. Deplorable wrongdoings have been decreased exceptionally in the states that have a death penalty law. Capital punishment keeps recurrent guilty parties off of the roads. In Michigan a case that speaks to this occurred; â€Å"A man who was employed by Honeywell Inc. , in the wake of serving four years in jail for choking an associate has been accused of executing another colleague and a lady he supposedly followed and compromised for weeks† (Sullum individual document). Had capital punishment been permitted in Michigan the woman’s life could have been fought, for the male who killed her would have been executed some time before and never got the opportunity to kill her. Capital punishment might be a long procedure, yet it doesn't give those waiting for capital punishment a desire for parole. By having the deplorable hoodlums in detainment facilities waiting for capital punishment shields them from rehashing violations. In five out of seven cases it is said that hoodlums will by and by perpetrate wrongdoings once discharged from jail of prison. Capital punishment keeps the crooks in prison and executes them. This shields the overall population from dangerous wrongdoings from recurrent guilty parties. Capital punishment additionally keeps citizens costs low, on the grounds that the jail looses individuals in which the state duties would need to pay for. The residents of the state pay for the detainees, and my dispensing with the hoodlums imprisoned for offensive violations lessens cost by a high percent. The normal expense every year per jail is about $1 billion. By implementing capital punishment and making it legitimate can lessen that cost by practically half. Half doesn't seem like much in such enormous terms, however in all actuality it is a huge measure of cash that the citizens can be utilizing elsewhere. Battling families despite everything need to take care of for detained crooks and capital punishment can thusly have more cash in that home, since it would not be put towards the jail. There is another side to capital punishment, be that as it may. A great many people accept capital punishment is shameless and vile. Some state that the possibility of â€Å"an eye for an eye† ought not make a difference to capital punishment. The death penalty is as yet a demonstration of homicide, which is deserving of law. This is a significant contention of those against the death penalty. There are additionally strict perspectives that keep many restricted of capital punishment. Christians see capital punishment as off-base as a result of the way that slaughtering an executioner is as yet murdering, which is a wrongdoing that breaks one of the Ten Commandments. The huge populace of Christians in the United States keeps the vote against the death penalty high, since this country was based on that confidence and it is additionally the most noteworthy religion in the country. Capital punishment keeps citizens cost low, keeps recurrent guilty parties off of the road, and prevents deplorable wrongdoing, and thusly ought to be made legitimate in each of the fifty conditions of the United States of America. The Death Penalty The Death Penalty: It is Never Justified A youngster has been accused of the ruthless homicide of a multi year old young lady subsequent to assaulting and damaging her body. This wrongdoing was so grievous and inconceivable that the main discipline that appears to fit the wrongdoing is the death penalty; there is simply one problem†the man sentenced is blameless. People in general is so up to speed in carrying Justice to the killed young lady that through the death penalty more bad form is brought into the world and the life of another blameless being is taken. There is no returning and fixing the mistake. There is no fixing in the matter of death. The inadvertent homicide of an honest individual through capital punishment is Just one manner by which capital punishment is a totally exploitative, defective, and unjustified type of discipline. Issues related with capital punishment, for example, it being insensitive, biased, and an out of line type of discipline, are reasons that death penalty is never the response to disturbed homicide [claim]. Capital punishment is incredibly coldhearted. Three regular procedures used to play out the sentence incorporate the hot seat, gas chambers, and deadly injection.Supporters of capital punishment contend that cutting edge science has disposed of the factor of agony by deadly infusion [rebuttal], however in what manner can this genuinely be demonstrated? The logical diary the Nature Publishing Group [backing] announced that practically a large portion of the detainees are as yet cognizant albeit deadened during the deadly infusion as the medication stops the heart. The NPG at that point proceeds to state, â€Å"If appropriately qualified people won't help set up another convention, the state will confront the possibility of proceeding to utilize novices to slaughter individuals with subjective and old fashioned innovation' (â€Å"Amateur† 2) [evidence].Dying is an agonizing thing. The discipline of death is as of now outrageous, however the way that the detainee is being put down with synthetic compounds that aren't given by doctors or researchers is savage and comes up short on any sympathy. Andrew Stephen, the United States supervisor of the New Statesman magazine which provides details regarding current issues, [backing] likewise clarified the cruelty of the most others conscious type of the death penalty: deadly infusion. Stephen clarified how the potassium chloride utilized in the infusion causes horrendous agony as it clears its path through the veins and into the heart to slaughter the person.Stephen follows this by expressing, â€Å"The American Veterinary Medical Association even gave rules in 2002 saying that the blend was unsatisfactory for putting pooches and felines, not to mention people, to sleep† (Stephen 33) [evidence]. By what means can a popular government in the U. S. which represents Justice potentially bolster this outrightly unfeeling type of discipline that isn't even appropriate for creatures? Its absolutely impossible to appropriately execute an individual, it is corrupt and out of line not make any difference what it's identity is done to, and in this manner doesn't hold a spot in the U. S. Jurisdiction. The capital punishment can likewise be exceptionally discretionary or irregular as in there is ot a set standard for everybody who submits murder to be condemned to death. It has neither rhyme nor reason how a few detainees who are sentenced for horrendous homicides get the benefit of living while other people who didn't kill without a second thought don't get the open door for restoration and recovery. The reason for such assertion can be ascribed to segregation. David Bruck, who was a Harvard and University of South Carolina graduate, filled in as a legal advisor detending those charged witn capita discipline [backing].Bruck represents how uncalled for the death penalty is in an exposition he composed for The New Republic magazine. Bruck clarifies how a man from Louisiana named Ernest Knighton murdered a corner store proprietor while ransacking the service station. This is obviously a horrible wrongdoing; in any case, the wrongdoing was not planned and could not hope to compare to other frightful homicides, yet by one way or another Knighton was picked to be executed. This might be clarified by the way that Knighton was dark, the casualty was white, the Jury at his hearing was completely white, and he needed adequate defense. In different words, separation was a factor. Bruck clarifies this execution by expressing, â€Å"Ernest Knighton was selected to pass on the manner in which an angler removes a cricket from an ait Jar. Nobody cares which cricket gets skewered on the hook† (Bruck NPA) [evidence]. There were plainly more compromising killers out there than Knighton, however Knighton was picked to kick the bucket. The possibility that this sort of separation will proceed with is completely conceivable [modal qualifier] and outlines the deficiencies in the arrangement of capital punishment. However, in cases, for example, the death penalty where passing is included, there is no space for flaws. Life is a valuable blessing not to be trifled with. Cash likewise is by all accounts an unfair factor in capital punishment, as rich eople are bound to maintain a strategic distance from capital punishment than are needy individuals who can't manage the cost of legitimate resistance. A rich killer's life is not any more significant than the life of a poor killer, yet the possibility of endurance for a poor man is a lot of lower than that of a rich man. This cruel actuality is unfair.Scott Phillips writer for the Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology [backing] composes, â€Å"As Former Supreme Court Justice William Douglas, for instance, noted: ‘One scans our narratives futile for the execution of any individual from the wealthy layers of this society† (Phillips 718) [evidence ]. It is efinitely conceivable [modal qualifier] that the individuals who have cash are the ones who can manage the cost of the best protection and in this way maintain a strategic distance from capital punishment. It scarcely appears to be reasonable that the rich get the chance to live over the poor not on account of blamelessness, but since of the size of their wallets. Two wrongs don't make a privilege under the states of homicide. The arrangement of the death penalty is clearly imperfect as it separates and apparently picks its casualties at arbitrary, taking a chance with the chance of murdering even the guiltless. Backers of capital punishment contend that it is the main type of discipline that is orthy of homicide [rebuttal]. This is a â€Å"eye for an eye† attitude. Edward Koch, the previous civic chairman of New York [backing], bolstered this attitude by expressing, â€Å".. it c

Self-Monitoring in the Treatment of Eating Disorders

Self-Monitoring in the Treatment of Eating Disorders Eating Disorders Treatment Print Self-Monitoring in the Treatment of Eating Disorders By Elisha Carcieri, Ph.D. Updated on January 19, 2020 Yellow Dog Productions / Getty Images More in Eating Disorders Treatment Symptoms Diagnosis Awareness and Prevention In the treatment of eating disorders, logs or diaries are also known as self-monitoring records. Self-monitoring involves keeping track of behaviors, symptoms, or experiences over time. Self-monitoring is an important part of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for many mental health disorders. For depression or anxiety, for example, therapy often involves keeping track of thoughts and associated emotions and behaviors. For insomnia, patients are usually asked to keep sleep logs. Keeping track of eating habits with a food log or diary can help you to better understand your current problems in order to promote change. Why Self-Monitoring is Helpful One of the reasons self-monitoring is so helpful is that it can be very difficult to recall thoughts, feelings, or behaviors after some time has passed. In the moment self-monitoring makes it possible to get an accurate picture of what is really going on with your eating behavior. This can be an important tool whether you are working to change a behavior or problem on your own (self-help), or while working with a therapist. Self-monitoring is a key part of enhanced CBT for eating disorders (CBT-E) and begins following the first session of therapy. Self-monitoring records are reviewed with your therapist during each CBT-E session. Challenges to Self-Monitoring There are challenges associated with self-monitoring. It takes time and effort to complete the records after each meal or snack and may require some planning on your part. However, you can remind yourself that self-monitoring is an integral part of recovery and it is not a practice you will have to maintain forever. Many people have also experienced recording their food intake for weight loss programs and were made to feel bad whenever their records revealed that they did not successfully stick to the diet. As a result, they may have felt embarrassed or ashamed of seeing their eating patterns recorded on paper. Your therapist, on the other hand, takes a very different approach to your records and will not judge you or ridicule you. Instead, he or she will work with you to use self-monitoring as a tool to provide insight into your eating disorder and inform your treatment. How to Keep a Food Record It is recommended that you jot down the following as part of your self-monitoring record: Everything you eat and drink over the course of the day and nightAny thoughts or feelings that went along with consuming that meal or snackWhether that particular episode of eating is considered a binge (according to you)Whether you  did anything to try to shed the calories, such as vomiting, using laxatives, or exercisingLocation (for example, “at the dinner table,” or “in front of the television)Any relevant contextual factors, thoughts, or feelings (for example, “at family get together,” or “I ate too much,” or anxious, depressed, happy) You should initially keep your self-monitoring logs without making any changes to your eating patterns for at least a week to begin to identify patterns and themes. See if you can identify any problematic behaviors or associations. For example, you may notice that you are much more likely to binge eat after fasting for many hours during the day. After this period of time, you can move on to making some changes in your eating patterns. The next step is to make changes to any problematic patterns and to establish a regular pattern of eating. Paper or App Formats are Both Okay for Self-Monitoring Self-monitoring is traditionally done using paper and pencil. But technology has allowed for the use of the computer or smartphone apps that are geared toward recovery. Many find that the convenience of electronic records is motivating and a better fit for a busy lifestyle. Recovery Record and Rise Up Recover are both free apps for appropriate self-monitoring that can be used independently or while working with a therapist as part of eating disorder treatment. In fact, a 2018 study found that some eating disorder patients found Recovery Record to be supportive and helpful in their recovery period, though others found it to be obstructive. Some applications also incorporate feedback and encourage the use of adaptive coping skills. There are many apps that may appear to fit the bill for self-monitoring, but focus almost exclusively on calorie counting. However, self-monitoring and calorie counting are not the same. Self-monitoring calls for recording information on emotions, context, and patterns of behavior that simple calorie counting does not. It is this additional information that is so powerful in promoting recovery. In fact, exact measurements and calorie counting are discouraged for people with eating disorders and are not a focus in CBT-E. Many sufferers of eating disorders are very rigid about their food intake and spend a lot of time thinking about what they have eaten and efforts to “make up” for calories they have consumed. Calorie counting is not recommended because it can serve to promote this obsessive behavior. Resources Self-monitoring is one of the first steps toward recovery from eating disorders and can be a rich source of information for anyone struggling with their relationship with food. If you are interested in self-help, the Centre for Clinical Interventions offers a workbook called Overcoming Disordered Eating that includes self-monitoring. Many people may find that they need support from a therapist. The National Eating Disorder Association provides a directory of eating disorder therapists. A Word From Verywell While self-monitoring can prove to be a helpful part of eating disorder recovery, it should never completely replace care from your recovery team and doctors. Be sure to always keep them in a loop about your recovery, including the records you are keeping. If you may be veering toward an unhealthy behavior, they can help you correct it and stay on the road to recovery.

Stereotypes of Men in Advertisements Essay - 2022 Words

Stereotypes of Men in Advertisements Visual representation of reality, as seen through mass media, is acknowledged by sociologists to be influential in shaping peoples views of the world. Our everyday realities are articulated mostly by what we see in the media. The role of advertising in this interpretation of reality is crucial. The target audiences self-identification with the images being a basic prerequisite for an advertisements effectiveness, makes advertising one of the most important factors in the building of behavior models and values systems. The way a certain notion is managed at a visual level determines how people will perceive this notion and whether they will identify with it or not. Meaning is encoded in the†¦show more content†¦I intend to look at these ads as a group of 20, looking at collective similarities among them and any common stereotypes and themes in the way these ads portray men. I also intend to examine any general differences between the ads fro the mens magazines, and those from the womens magazines, as well as differences along product lines. I expect to see reinforcement of the stereotypes discussed in Denise Kervins study as well as the stereotypes delineated by other authors cited in this paper. I expect that these reinforcements will occur as much as, but in a different way than is seen earlier in time as discussed in the various literature cited in this paper. I also expect that these stereotypes will be equally present, yet will manifest themselves differently depending on the target audience and product being pitched. Dominant discourses surrounding gender encourage us to accept that the human race is naturally divided in to male and female, each gender realistically identifiable by a set of immutable characteristics. In Foucaults terms, relations of difference are social constructs belonging to social orders that contain hierarchies of power, defined, named and delimited by institutional discourses, to produce social practices. It uses routines, often called â€Å"validation rules† or â€Å"check routines†, that check for correctness, meaningfulness, and security of data that are input to the system. Validation Rule – A Validation rule is a criterion used in the process of data validation, carried out after the data has been encoded onto an input medium and involves a data vet or validation program. Evaluation of User Guide I have tested my user guide by providing my system to others with no other instructions apart from the ones on the user guide. I asked whether there was anything missing or anything else that may help. One common criticism I got is that I didn’t have any kind of contact information in case the User Guide did not provide enough information. I also got advice to specify a little more in the contents of what is actually on each page. I have taken on these criticisms and have created a re-evaluated User Guide, starting on the next page: Bin-IT System User Guide Contents: (Page) 1. Introduction – What is this software? 2. Instructions – Spreadsheet settings and functions 3. Instructions (continued) – Mail merge (Making the wage slip) 4. Troubleshooting Glossary of Technical Terms 5. Contact Details – Phone, Fax Email Introduction: The software on this CD provides a system to make wage slips and employee information leaflets for your employees at the Bin-IT workplace. This is a bespoke software which is tailor made for your use. There are on screen instructions for installing your software but this user guide will provide more information with in-detail instructions, troubleshooting help and a glossary. Instructions: Basic instructions to run the software: 1. Specify which folders you want to save the spreadsheet, wage slip and leaflet. Click the â€Å"Run† button which will automatically save the spreadsheet and both documents to your computer. 2. Once you have saved the files to your computer locate your spreadsheet. This will be the spreadsheet you use to calculate the wages of various employees in your Bin-IT company. The columns you’ll want to change regularly are from G to M where the actual hours. You can also change the wages or job position if people are given promotions or something similar. 3. You will notice that when you enter a value out of the range in the hours worked (outside of the parameters 0 to 12) then an error message will appear telling you that you have entered an incorrect value. This is validation – this stops you from making typing errors when entering in data. 4. You can change the validation rules by selecting the values you wish to change by selecting the field you wish to change, going to Data Validation and then changing the parameters accordingly. 5. Now the spreadsheet functions are sorted – we can move onto the mail merge functions. Mail merge allows you to automatically take the data from the spreadsheet and use it to make a wage slip and/or employee information leaflet. This software comes with the files already linked to each other therefore you don’t need to actually link the spreadsheet with the other documents. 6. Open up the Pay Slip word document. Go to tools letters and mailing Mail Merge. This will open up the mail merge wizard. 7. What will be shown to you is a mail merge wizard showing you which spreadsheet is selected to be merged with the word document. You can edit the recipient list and change who you wish the Mail Merge to apply to. 8. Click Next twice to skip to Step 5 of 6 and there you can preview all your print outs for the pay slips. 9. Click Next again and you are on Step 6 of 6, print. Click print and choose which ones you which to print, or just leave it on All and click OK. Before printing – if there was anything you wanted to change on a one-time-basis with any of the employees’ wage slips then you can click edit individual letters and change a specific thing for a specific wage slip. 10. When doing Mail Merge for the leaflets just do exactly the same thing but on Microsoft Publisher Troubleshooting * As stated in the instructions, you may receive an error message when trying to enter in data in some cells on the spreadsheet. This is because a validation rule has been set on the specific cell(s). Step 4 explains how to change the validation rules if they do not meet the criteria of some of your employees. * On Step 7, you may have a problem with the Microsoft Word document not being properly linked to the spreadsheet with your data in. In the event that this occurs, click ‘Select a different list’. From this use Explorer to find the spreadsheet file in the location you saved it, select it and then choose Sheet 1. Teen Suicide Essays (816 words) - Suicide, Abnormal Psychology

Teen Suicide Kids can fall prey to a variety of dangerous methods to cope with the turmoil and anxiety of their adolescent years. The Troubled Teens series is intended to bring parents a collection of resources that will answer their most frequent questions about the pitfalls of being a depressed teen. Each week of the series we will cover another of the most common means that teens use to cope with their depression. What Is It? Of all the complications of untreated depression, suicide is the most tragic. It has often been called a permanent solution to a temporary problem. In the midst of depression it can begin to look like the only option left. Why Do People Do It? Depressed people who take their own lives do so because they are enduring unbearable psychological pain and perceive that there are no more options available to them. Physical pain can also trigger suicidal feelings, but pain of psychological origin can be just as, if not more, intense. Who Commits Suicide Some distinction has been made between suicide attempters and suicide completers. Suicide attempters are likely to be female and generally attempt suicide by taking an overdose of medication. Suicide completers, by contrast, are more often male and tend to use more lethal means. Both genders, however, may fall within either of these groups. Suicide threats should always been taken very seriously. They are a cry for help. The primary risk factors that have been identified for completed suicides are major depression, substance abuse, severe personality disorders, male gender, older age, living alone, physical illness, and previous suicide attempts. Chronic pain and illness have also been associated with suicide. Suicide is most prevalent among the young and the elderly. It is the leading cause of death among those aged 15-24. Among those young people who attempt suicide, eventually anywhere between 0.1 and 10% of these will complete the act. For more information about the epidemiology of suicide, the Task Force on Life and the Law has provided an excellent resource called When Death is Sought. Although this online book deals primarily with euthanasia, it gives some valuable information about suicide in general. Warning Signs The Suicide Awareness/Voices of Education (SA/VE) Website lists the following danger signs: Talking or joking about suicide. Statements about being reunited with a deceased loved one. Statements about hopelessness, helplessness, or worthlessness. Example: Life is useless. Everyone would be better off without me. It doesn't matter. I won't be around much longer anyway. I wish I could just disappear. Preoccupation with death. Example: recurrent death themes in music, literature, or drawings. Writing letters or leaving notes referring to death or the end. Suddenly happier or calmer. Loss of interest in things one cares about. Unusual visiting or calling people one cares about - saying their good-byes. Giving possessions away, making arrangements, setting one's affairs in order. Self-destructive behavior (alcohol/drug abuse, self-injury or mutilation, promiscuity). Risk-taking behavior (reckless driving/excessive speeding, carelessness around bridges, cliffs or balconies, or walking in front of traffic). Having several accidents resulting in injury. Close calls or brushes with death. Obsession with guns or knives. Treatments The person who is depressed enough to be thinking of suicide needs immediate professional help. Do not feel afraid to bring up the topic with your teen. Ask questions about their plans. Those who are passively suicidal or have only vague ideas of wanting to die should still be taken very seriously and arrangements made for them to see a psychiatrist. If your teen seems in immediate danger of a suicide attempt, call 911 or your local emergency room and ask for assistance. Because medication and therapy take some time to become effective, it may be necessary for your child to be hospitalized for their own protection. During a crisis situation, do not leave them alone. Do not minimize their feelings. It is not important that the problem seems trivial or easily solved to you. What counts is how severe the problem seems to them. Do not treat your teen as if they are simply seeking attention. Suicidal behavior is an indication of deep psychological pain. They are asking for your help. Reassure your child that they are not a burden to you and they are not weak. Praise them
